Every sunset the songs of fishing crews can be heard in the hills above Lake Kivu. As night falls over the lake, white hot flames are what lure the sambaza fish to the surface.
The fishing crews of Gisenyi are all part of the cooperative. They share song, they share knowledge of the lake, and share the profits of their catch. Fishing with Fire is an ethnographic short documentary about the life and customs of fishing cooperatives in the Rwandan town of Gisenyi.
Through the daily rituals of the young men who work on the boats, we learn something about healing and reconciliation in Rwandan society 24-years post genocide.
